I've tried to run with gtf instead of cvt as well, but with no luck. It could be a missing piece in the nouveau driver, but exactly how to tackle that is not known. I attempted creating new modes for just about every common resolution I can think of using "cvt" and "gtf" but each time it fails to change the resolution.
